The Barclay farmhouse was built by John Barclay Jr., son of one of Philadelphia’s largest distillery owners at the time, who went on to become a leading farmer during the 19th century. He owned over 400 acres (160 ha) that produced everything from hay and corn to barley and rye whiskey—the last being made after prohibition ended in 1933! In 1867 he purchased South Valley Forge Road property which consisted mostly of farmland but also included woodlands and Barclay began making improvements.
